Taken and then Complied: Road Trips
From early 2000’s up to 2019 I travelled to New Brunswick a lot to visit family and friends of my childhood and adolescence. I found the most fun way to do it was to buy a bike in the US, anywhere from Wisconsin/Pennsylvania and east, drive to the Maritimes, do my visiting and drive back across the continent.
I sometimes did video commentaries as I went, and these are included here, together with some of the Iron Butt Association (IBA) Certification rides I have done. Those will follow all down the page.
The first flick below was not an IBA ride, it was simply a fly in, and a ride to New Brunswick from NY state, around the Maritime provinces, and back the suburbia Vancouver: Langley, BC.
I bought a bike NY state, a 2002 Sundance Orange GL1800. There was another reasonably close by, so I bought it as well. I rode the first one from where I picked it up, taking the ferry across Lake Champlain, then through the back-roads through New England to Calais, Maine, then on to Shanklin Settlement, 26 miles east of Saint John: which was the destination. I toured around P.E.I. and Nova Scotia, back across the Digby Ferry to Saint John, rested up, serviced the bike, headed west. Day 1, to Boston area. Picked up my co-rider who I had flown into Boston, headed north to Northern Vermont for the second GL1800, Apollo Blue 2001. The 2002 had about 54K miles on it when I picked it up, the 2001 had 45k miles. Both were beauties. Nasty wind-noise sometime from the hand-held camera while one-handing an 850lb bike at usually around 80mph, but it was fun. Regardless: I hope you enjoy. And this was the trip…just click on the first pic first.
North to Alaska: and keep going to the Arctic Circle
My buddy and I headed to Alaska, with myself headed up to the Arctic circle from Fairbanks while he took a day off. We went the back-woods route, up through Dease Lake to meet with the Al-Can highway, then a digression to Skagway for the night, then on to Tok for the next night, where it was discovered that I had a blown rear shock which was bleeding fluids: next day to Fairbanks. Rented a BMW GS650, took it to the Arctic circle, in rather nasty conditions for most of the trip from Fairbanks to the Circle and return to Fairbanks. Then, back to Langley (suburban Vancouver area) on a 1000lb pogo stick ( I really haven’t pee’d the same since), but taking the short way back through Dease Lake instead of going to Fort St John, thence south. A very good trip, other than the bad shock. All taken with a hand-held camera, while handling the Goldwing one-handed, so EXPECT WIND NOISE. Some extraordinarily beautiful scenery in many, many places. It is hard to describe how beautiful that country is. I was up to Dease again this year: and would go again in a second. I have ridden over 1000 miles in a day many times. I only requested certs twice for that. The Iron Butt Association (IBA) Certified Endurance Ride is one where you must have a witnessed time and place of departure, receipts showing place and time of each fuel-up and lodging, and a witnessed time and place ending of the ride. No proof, no certification: as it should be.

1500 Miles: 21 Hours: Iron Butt Certification for 1500 miles in under 24 hours. Through the mountains from San Diego in early April 2008. This is the bike used. This is just here for your entertainment. Click the pic>>>
